The Future for Glamorganshire
We have recognised that the business management and operating of the Club needs to be the best it can be, so that the playing and social benefit of golf for the members, is maximised now and in the future.
The governance sub-committee have carried out a review of our Governance and the successful change many clubs in Wales and the UK have achieved. Some as much as twenty years ago. It is now time for us to create a Club where our members, family and friends want to be, to create a great future and involve YOU in that process.
Put simply: Governance is the system by which a Club is directed and managed. It influences how the objectives of the Club are set, achieved, sustained, spells out the rules and procedures for making Club decisions and determines the means of optimising and monitoring performance, including how risk is monitored and assessed.
We recognise that our decision making is slow, we have not developed a strategy that will see us implementing plans consistently for the next three to five years. Our Captain effectively leads the business of the Club and chairs the general committee, accepting huge responsibility and accountability, yet changes every year. Our members are not getting the best golf and social facilities, and we need to care about them and involve them more. You might think this statement is brutal but these comments are consistent with every other golf club we have researched, who realised the need for change.
What are we going to do about it?
The goal is to hold an EGM in September 2021 in order to approve the changes to the constitution and rules that would be required to facilitate a new Governance structure. Preparing the way for our new Captains to enjoy their unique year in office.
The Governance structure will place:
The objectives, strategic direction, planning and legacy, “The Business”, in the hands of a four person Management Board. This will consist of Finance, Membership, marketing and revenue, Course and estate, with a Chair to ensure Clarity and Transparency of Strategy, Accountability with Continuity, for the ultimate benefit of our members.
The playing and social “The Golf” in the hands of the Captains’ Committee.
The day to day implementation of the plan, running and management of all aspects of the Club. “The Operation” to the professional team of General Manager, Golf Professional, Course and estate and Hospitality.
We can only achieve our goal with the help and engagement of YOU our members, to secure the future of your Club.
Early in the new year we want your enthusiastic involvement in presentations with the help of Wales Golf and probably Zoom, to outline structures, accountabilities and ways of working. Develop an ever-growing list of Q&A’s to satisfy your need for clarity and understanding. Build the right process to achieve our goal, addressing all the detail the amendment of constitution and rules will require. Use your experience and talent, to raise our awareness of things we have missed or not thought about.
Please start now:
Feed in any questions to build our Q&A, send the Governance team your experiences of other successful golf clubs you have visited or are members of. Highlight any things we should be wary of in your experience. Seek out Brian Roberts, Steve Charles, Ellen Davies, Martin Price and Alan Davies (The Governance Team) Your Captains, John and Jenny. Bombard us with questions.
